A midtown bar that stays open till 3 a.m., the News Room attracts a mix of hipsters, service workers and veteran drinkers who won't be holding public office anytime soon. It is definitely not the city's most genteel drinking establishment. Owner Kevin McGraw decided to embrace the bar's divier elements when he and designer Scott Davis came up with an ad campaign. Posters for the bar feature black-and-white photographs of authentic News Room regulars and threatening messages such as "If you can stomach our customers, you can stomach our food" and "Our idea of a fancy drink is one served in an actual glass." A character known as Broadway Joe appears on a poster that reads: "If our drinks don't knock you on your ass, our customers just might." Joe was photographed with a cigarette in one hand, a drink in the other and a lifetime of resentment written on his face. The ads go to show that some News Rooms still speak the truth.
