In this summer's U.S. premiere of the new, abbreviated
Seussical at the Coterie, there was so much going on with Jennifer Myers Ecton's costume designs that we were compelled to see the show twice. For this blend of Dr. Seuss characters and stories built around Horton the Elephant, Ecton appeared to have perused reams of illustrations for guidance but, aside from the traditionally topped Cat in the Hat, found her own delirious tangents. For the Sour Kangaroo, she wrapped the hem of a lavender dress around a Hula-Hoop, giving the marsupial's every step a rubbery bounce. The simian chorus boys wore shorts, skater kneepads and what looked like ancient football helmets. And five female characters from the bird family donned at least three different styles and colors of plumage, including the feathered finery of Mayzie, the closest thing to a Vegas showgirl that the Coterie's stage is likely to see.
