Michael Andrew Smith in The Hobbit
This year, Michael Andrew Smith came into his own with two diverse performances: in The Laramie Project, where he played several roles including Matthew Shepard's killer, Aaron McKinney; and in the elementary-school-aged title role in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. But his Hobbit performance as a reptilian creature was viscerally chilling. He was like a cross between Oscar Wilde and a boa constrictor: a slimy, fey predator full of knowledge and toxicity.
