Archie Scott Gobber gets better and better. A sculpture called "Erect," from an early summer group exhibition at the Dolphin, embodied what's so good about his work: It's funny, smart, well-crafted and thoughtful — but not self-righteous or too self-reflexive. Parsing words, making suggestive word comparisons and exploring the semiotics of language, Gobber thoughtfully comments on how the political is personal and, often, how the personal should be political. Anytime art makes us laugh and think seriously about its subject matter — without suffocating us with too much ego or a too widely cast net —we're in.
