Through its first two rounds, KJHK 90.7's DJ Battle operated as smoothly as Big Daddy Kane. More than a dozen DJs showcased their scratching and mixing skills, and judges scored participants on style, originality and arrangement. During the first interlude, B-boys and B-girls started breakin' on the dance floor; the second reserved the spotlight for MCs, who ran the gamut from mic pro Mac Lethal to a few cats who, bless 'em, couldn't flow from a faucet. The controversy began when the field narrowed to DJ Proof and two-time title holder SKU. First Cynsere, who felt his sparkling set warranted a spot in the finals, grabbed the mic and demanded a recount. Then, after SKU cut some fighting words into his composition, Proof interrupted and overloaded SKU's program with his own rebuttal. The ensuing cacophony, which organizers and fans alike watched with dropped jaws, rendered the judges' sheets superfluous. Scrambling to maintain order, host C.J. Wilford allowed both contestants one more minute to show and prove, after which the crowd would decide the winner. Impressed by SKU's technical wizardry (and, in some cases, incensed by Proof's tactics), the crowd proclaimed the winner and still champion.
