The Uptown Boutique has been Independence Square's fashionable secret for two years now. One look inside, and you'll have told your last Independence meth joke. "This is Cindy's baby," says stylist Courtney Cook, a manager at the shop. She's referring to owner Cindy McClain, wife of Ken McClain, the town's successful lawyer turned developer, who has bought up much of Independence Square. "I don't blame her," Cook continues, with a glance around. Inside the historic old bank building, racks are packed tight with labels one would expect in West Hollywood but might be surprised to see in downtown Independence. Kate Spade, Betsey Johnson, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Free People, Rojas, Anna Sui, Harajuku, French Connection and Chinese Laundry are just a small sampling. McClain also sells jewelry, bath products, candles and the increasingly vital undergarment Spanx. The prices go from expensive to reasonable to amazingly cheap — especially during season-end blowout sales.
