Best Comfort Food Downtown
The Downtown Grill and Convenience Store
For downtown workers who want to go out to lunch on a budget, the choices are limited: sandwiches, burritos, sandwiches, sandwiches and more sandwiches. That's not a good thing on those dreary Wednesdays when the only salvation lies in a steaming plate of home cooking. When we get to feeling that way, we drag ourselves down to the best-kept secret inside the downtown freeway loop: the Downtown Grill and Convenience Store. Everybody knows that the joint serves the best made-to-order burgers and hot dogs around (not to mention the fact that diners can stock up on hand lotion, Kleenex and smokes for the rest of the workday). But the proprietors recently unveiled a whole menu of comfort foods: crispy, pan-fried chicken; tender pot roast; mouth-watering meatloaf; and, on Fridays, our personal favorite, fried, whole catfish coated in a nicely salted batter. There's not a dish on the menu that costs more than six bucks, and that's complete with taters, veggies and a dinner roll. (Dieters can order a salad.) It's just the relief we need when we're neck-deep in a workweek and feel like we're light years from home.
