Best Cop

Doug Niemeier

Kansas City, Missouri, Police Sgt. Doug Niemeier answered the call when two bodies were discovered in a detached garage at 26th Street and Montgall Avenue on September 2, 2004. In the weeks that followed, Niemeier ran the investigation that led to the arrest of Terry Blair, who was eventually charged with eight counts of murder. Remarkably, before the victims -- all women -- were linked to a serial killer, camera crews from the A&E show The First 48 had been on hand to document the investigation. When it first aired in January, The First 48 showed Niemeier operating with a coolness that belied his youthful appearance. DNA testing cinched the case, but the pursuit resembled an old episode of Homicide more than it did CSI. Investigators learned of Blair by interviewing streetwalkers. Once Blair was taken into custody, Niemeier, unselfish to the end, deferred to a detective who specializes in interrogations.
