Best Curtain Call

"Sordid Lives"

In its production of Del Shore's Sordid Lives last autumn, Christopher King's Minds Eye Theater let audience members spend two hours with some unapologetically trashy families. One of the comedy's characters was nearing two decades of institutionalization because he was too gay for his kin's comfort. It was a bit of a stretch -- people aren't put in the hospital for being gay anymore (are they?) -- but it wasn't completely bonkers given the show's hillbilly sensibilities. One of the sad fellow's many tics was assuming the identity of county-music legend Tammy Wynette, and actor Kevin Eib pulled it off with panache. So when the cast assembled for its curtain call, King set his cast members' bows and curtsies to a throbbing dance mix of Wynette's "This Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad." It turned into a party that recalled Wynette's delicious collaboration with the KLF.
