The frozen custard at Sheridan's emerges from behind the counter with a spoon standing straight up like a flag planted to let the world know that you have claimed it. After that, it's a race to down as much of the Mocha Almond concrete — chocolate custard mixed with espresso and almonds — as you can before it melts or your brain freezes. Staffed by an army of fresh-faced high school students and kept spotless at all times, the Overland Park-based franchise has been generating serious lines every summer since the flagship store opened in 1998. Even the decadent sundaes, thick shakes and fancy lattes don't cost very much, but your dog gets the best deal. Sheridan's has free puppy cones.•
