At Friends, a cozy Japanese eatery on 39th Street's restaurant row, the waitstaff's uniforms remind us of the restaurant where Zach Braff worked in Garden State. But we get better service — even when the place is extra busy from 5 to 9 p.m. Mondays and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. That's when sushi slabs cost only a buck. The menu is loaded with old favorites: tuna, salmon, yellowtail and eel. A bunch of rolls are on sale, too, for $3.99. Not that Friends really needs its happy hour. The joint is affordable all the time, whether you eat in or opt for the free delivery. And frequent patrons can sign up for a VIP discount card, which makes this restaurant a best friend to sophisticated but financially challenged diners.
