Best Deep-Fried Celebration
Royals 12, Yankees 9 -- August 11
The Royals might have tanked at the end of the season, blowing several opportunities at capturing the pennant, but Kansas Citians still must rejoice at their team's improbable turnaround from a year ago. After more than a decade of misery, the men in blue finally gave fans something to cheer about, with the loudest hurrahs coming in the team's August 11 victory over the loathsome New York Yankees. The more than 40,000 fans who filed into Kauffman Stadium that Monday night were driven into a frenzy by a game that yielded an American League record nineteen doubles (eleven of them by the Royals, a team record) and an eighth-inning hit by Mike Sweeney that earned every ticket holder in the house a free box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Great stuff, though none of it would have mattered had the Royals not taken the game, a victory as sweet as any in this wild and wonderful season.
