Dogfightin' Dames

Over the past year, the Kansas City Roller Warriors' Bionics and Dogfightin' Dames have revived the sport of roller derby in Kansas City. And they did it with a sly smile. The cheerleaders? Drag queens. The scorekeeper? A dude in a bunny costume. Halftime entertainment? Break dancers and belly dancers. Even their aliases spoke volumes. Estee Slaughter, Princess Annaconda and Dominant Jean could kick your ass -- but at least you'd laugh while they did it. While the Chiefs eternally struggle with defense, we think it's only fitting to laud the Dames (who skate in uniforms reminiscent of 1940s fighter pilots) for their ability to check opposing jammers into stands, start fights and perform stunts such as flying dive tackles.
