North 800 Road and East 1500 Road Lawrence, Kansas
We must admit, the rivalry between Kansas and Missouri felt neutered after 2004. That's when, thanks to hypersensitive wartime political correctness, the Border War was renamed the Border Showdown. L-a-m-e. But then we heard about Quantrill Acres, a subdivision located in Lawrence -- the heart of Jayhawker country. We couldn't believe it; the name sounded like something out of the Onion. Quantrill is William Quantrill, the Confederate wild man who led 450 warriors into Lawrence on August 21, 1863. In what is now known as the Lawrence Massacre, Quantrill's raiders killed at least 150 men and boys. Then they looted the city and torched it. Lawrence allowed a development to be named after this guy? Wow. Lawrence resident Mark Jakubauskas put it best in a letter to TheLawrence Journal-World: "One wonders if this is part of a plan by the developer to eventually name a series of subdivisions after mass murderers -- perhaps we'll see ÔMcVeigh Estates' or ÔBin Laden Townhomes' next?" Advantage, Missouri.
