It's usually not a good thing when a neighborhood is known for producing a smell. But when the dominant industry is coffee production, nostrils flare with delight. A Folgers plant has operated in the northwest pocket of downtown Kansas City, Missouri, since 1908. In the spring, J.M. Smucker Co., Folgers' owner, announced that production would stop in 2012 as part of a companywide restructuring plan. The news disappointed business leaders and others who love the smell of coffee being roasted. The fan page "Please Don't Close the Kansas City Folgers Plant!!" became a popular "like" for thousands of Facebook users, sharing their dread that a piece of Kansas City's industrial heritage would disappear, along with the aroma of those coffee beans. Alas, Smucker remains committed to its plan.
