Molly Murphy had a prolific few months early this year as the illustrator of numerous band fliers -- the colorful papers plastered on record store counter fronts and coffee shop bulletin boards. Whether we realize it or not, their aesthetic quality influences whether we stop and read or continue looking around for something else to catch our eyes. Murphy keeps the designs visually uncomplicated -- she doesn't clutter them with details, because readability is one of the demands placed on flier illustrators -- but that's not to say the images are simple: She creates unexpected scenarios like a naked girl restrained to a bed by strands of her own hair, readily armed with a pair of scissors, or a country singer in a cowboy hat with a crying horse climbing out of her mouth. She has a talent for fancy lettering, too. We hope that Murphy will reestablish herself as a flier illustrator in Lawrence, where she recently moved from Kansas City.
