Mixing solid gardening knowledge and a blooming sense of humor has enabled Kathi Krouch to seriously grow her gardening and landscaping business over the past nine years. "We're really gardeners for gardeners," Krouch says. "My staff is really well-educated. They know that gardening and landscaping isn't just about digging a hole but knowing about which plants thrive in this climate, when is the right time to prune, how to prune, and how to suggest the right plants for the right client. Gardeners know what they want. Some clients just want easy maintenance." The best clients, Krouch says, are people who love gardening but don't have time to do it themselves anymore. (The worst? "The people who ask if a plant comes in a different color, as if you can go out and make it for them.") Be patient -- her answering-machine message says she might be "too dirty to get to the phone."
