If you've bought a house this year, you know how frantic those first few months can be while, still full of idealism, you have energy to put your own personal stamp on the biggest purchase you'll ever make. That lawn would look so nice with a few perennials, and maybe you could make that patch of dirt where nothing grows into a Zen rock garden. But it takes forever to find what you need in the big-box stores that dominate the home-improvement market, and the odds of finding a clerk who gives a fuck about your project, let alone knows how to accomplish it, are against you. May we please suggest the Soil Service Garden Center? It's been in the same family for four generations, and by now these people have learned a few tricks. And despite its small mom-and-pop façade on Troost, the store holds every implement, chemical, plant and decorative rock you can think of, along with the best customer service we've ever had from someone who wants to help us lay sod.
