Best Greasy Spoon

Ruby's Dagwoods Cafe

Dagwoods, the lovable L-shaped joint that proudly presents a man-size platter of biscuits and sausage gravy for less than three bucks, has been a fixture on Southwest Boulevard for decades. But it's not so greasy-looking anymore: The place has had a recent face-lift ("We actually get one every time it floods down here," said one smoky-voiced waitress), but the no-frills sensibility -- paper napkins, plastic ashtrays on every table, a "Kiss my ass" attitude to fussy, irritating customers -- is a constant. In the mornings, the place is filled with hunky construction workers shoveling in the $4.85 pork chop breakfast. For some diners, the other customers can be more stimulating than the thick black coffee!
