Although this cozy, clubby little café doesn't always have a grilled cheese listed on the handwritten menu board (which changes daily), the kitchen is always happy to whip one up: the kind that Mama used to make, with perfectly grilled, toasty buttered bread and gooey melted cheese. Created by Randy Parks and Mark Wingard out of the old Weneck Brothers Grocery Store, You Say Tomato is best-known for its creative panini sandwiches, but grilled-cheese lovers can have the traditional favorite custom-made. Those in the know can request slices from one of the four different kinds of fresh bread (white, wheat, light rye or sourdough) delivered daily from the nearby City Bakery, and with Cheddar, Swiss or Provolone cheese. Because You Say Tomato is popular among the arts community, it's not unusual for the kitchen crew to get orders for more iconoclastic sandwiches: Swiss with roasted tomatoes and pesto or Cheddar with bacon, Provolone and mushrooms. "If we have it on hand," Parks says, "we're happy to throw it in."
