Kansas City has never been an especially good market for news anchors with luxurious locks. Think back to Cynthia Smith's 1980s bleach job and Anne Peterson's wan wave or, more recently, Kelly Eckerman's pert pixie and Elizabeth Alex's conservative bob. Cynné Simpson, however, isn't just the loveliest reporter on the Channel 5 news team (she's a combination of Vanessa Williams and Beyoncé Knowles -- with a notebook); she's the best-tressed as well. Her journalism credentials are solid (she graduated summa cum laude from Howard University and interned with ABC's Nightline), and she's up every workday at 2 a.m. and out on Kansas City's meaner streets, covering murders, fires and assorted other tragedies by 4. Simpson doesn't try to look good when there's smoke in her eyes from the arson fire she's covering. "I'm happy if I just look composed," she says. "When you're out as early in the morning as I am, it's cold and humid, and as far as my hair is concerned, I just go with it." A perfect hair strategy, if you ask us.
