Nancy Leazer isn't a bleeding-heart, hold-your-hand kind of woman. Her voice is a little too loud; her speech is usually abrupt. But that's not surprising for someone who served as superintendent of Kansas City's Municipal Correctional Institution for nearly 15 years. What was surprising was the way inmates seemed to trust her. Walking the hallways, Leazer always faced a barrage of questions from inmates, and, no matter how clipped her responses, inmates always seemed satisfied that she'd do her best. Leazer took the time to understand how troubled circumstances could turn disadvantaged citizens into low-level criminals, and she advocated on their behalf. She refocused the correctional institution on rehabilitation and earned the kind of community trust that made foundations willing to give her the big bucks. When local officials decided that the jail would be shut down in August, few argued that the deteriorating facility should be saved. Advocates who didn't want MCI to close just didn't want to lose Leazer. Last month, though, she retired. Saying she'll be missed is an understatement.

I was so pleased to read the "BEST JAILER" is Nancy Leazer. Your article was correct, that woman took extra care to ensure the safety of our City and that many of these indiviuals would not be repeating their cycle of low-level crimes in our neighborhoods.
Thanks for reporting this smart, amazing, hard-working woman and standing up for the work she gave every day to our community.
I do hope that her retirement turns into a semi-retired and a second term doing productive work in Kansas City!
Thank You Pitch For Your Awareness!!! Well Done!
