Best Jingle

Shawnee Mission Hyundai

A good jingle is like a flame-licked brand, able to sear the name of a good or a service on the fleshy part of the brain cortex. (Who among us hasn't hummed or sung at least a verse of the Bob Hamilton Plumbing, Heating and A/C jingle?) The commercial ditty that gets our hearts pumping — and gas-pedal foot tapping — beckons car buyers to Shawnee Mission Hyundai, just a short drive from aiii thirrrty-fiiiive. Similar in spirit to another road-celebrating song — Tom Cochrane's 1991 hit, "Life Is a Highway" — the Hyundai spot uses a rock beat and a hooky chorus to make the dealership's proximity to an interstate seem fun and exciting. "We try to write music people would listen to if it wasn't a commercial," says Austin Bickford, a partner in BicMedia, the local production house that created the tune. BicMedia is also responsible for the memorable jingles used by Power Play and Celsius Tannery ("Love the way they flatter me"). Now, as the song says, get on the highway!

re the Chiefs victory song in 1970, I just assumed it was a spoof on "Goin' Ta Kansas City".

I still recall "Bill Sites, oh what a great great guy, Bill Sites, you'll get a real good buy, Linwood Boulevard and Gillham Plaza, he's got the Chevy deal that you've been afta...!" after all these (about 45) years!

Bill,

The original version of this entry mistakenly named Shawnee Mission Kia the winner. We at The Pitch intended to recognize Shawnee Mission Hyundai.

We've corrected the entry readers see here.

And here's a link to a blog entry that credits Carl Mazur for writing the Kia jingle. http://bit.ly/d1b7E

Yeah, it's okay, but it doesn't hold a candle to the classic "Call 321-2277 - anytime, night or day!" not to mention "Lassiter Ford in Buckner - Mi-SOO-ree!"

While we're on the subject of crappy songs, does anyone else remember that gawdawful piece of crap all the DJs recorded after the Chiefs won the SuperBowl in 1970? It REALLY sucked - on and on to a twelve-bar bluesy beat with lyrics like:

We're the best, Kansas City
Kansas City Chiefs!
We're number one, Kansas City
Kansas City Chiefs!
World football champions
Kansas City Chiefs!

etc. etc. etc.

I've often wondered if that's why the Chiefs never won another SuperBowl - they're afraid someone will write another song.

FYI. Austin is being disingenuous when he says Bic Media came up with the
Shawnee Mission Kia jingle. I happen to know for sure that my friend
Carl Mazur wrote and produced that ad at Evolution Audio while working as a producer for Time Warner Production. Thought you should know.
