A little local color was tucked inside last November's
Vanity Fair, an issue dedicated to music. Right there on the opening page of its extensive Music Portfolio was an Annie Leibovitz photograph of the Dixie Chicks, snapped in the backstage canyons of Kemper Arena on May 10, 2003. Natalie, Martie and Emily posed with a guitar, fiddle and banjo, respectively, their hair blown a bit by an unseen fan (the whirring electric kind). Free of makeup and costume, the ladies looked pretty and, more important, coming so soon after the furor about Maines' swipe at President Bush, reposed and content in the heartland.
