Best Lawrence Label 

Range Life Records

The same brothers who brought us the best local album also have established a sexy little imprint. Helmed by Zach Hangauer, the eldest of the Hangauer sons of Lawrence, Range Life Records has demonstrated how to assemble an arts-and-music collective and make it work — or, at least, how to release kickass CDs. Among them, the fantastic debuts from Fourth of July (the other three Hangauer lads, with friends) and White Flight (a hippie-hip-hop-freak-shop basement tape by former Anniversary leader Justin Roelofs), plus 1,000,000 Light Years, an electronic side project of FOJ players Patrick Hangauer and Steve Swyers. Distribution through Nebraska indie-powerhouse Saddle Creek ensures that these and upcoming releases — look for one from Adrienne Verhoeven this year — will be heard worldwide. Not bad for a bunch of Lawrence kids.

zach hangauer and his merry tribe of musical bandits are nothing short of a gleaming gift bestowed upon a fortunate lawrence music scene by an obviously benevolent deity that seems to be happy with the general state of things in kansas.
