Best Little Guy

Jennifer Larson

Park Lane apartment dweller Jennifer Larson didn't know anything about the concept of tax-increment financing before last winter, when she learned that the Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin law firm wanted to use TIF to bulldoze her building. Then Larson and her husband, Ed, educated themselves and led a grass-roots movement to save the Park Lane, located across from Mill Creek Park on the Country Club Plaza. In just weeks, Larson organized her fellow tenants and neighborhood activists into an influential coalition that defeated the nefarious plan. Though the Park Lane is now empty -- tenants were evicted anyway -- it still stands, and Kansas City preservationists have Larson's tenacity to thank.
