It's been five years since Marcus Cain -- artist, curator, Kansas City Art Institute instructor, and former editor of Review magazine -- mounted a solo exhibition; clearly, he's been busy. But last fall he made time for Tales of Caution, a collection of paintings, drawings and two large wall installations made of tape. The figures in Cain's works are sometimes humanlike and sometimes abstract, but they're always covered in the artist's characteristic patterns. (He comes from a family of quilters.) There was none of the extraneous work that so often serves as filler in solo exhibits -- instead, each of Cain's pieces, challenging but also accessible, earned its wall space in this remarkably tight show.
