When we took the last downtown homes tour, we couldn't help but think that Kansas City didn't quite have this loft thing down. A lot of the places seemed too fussy, too suburban. There was an overabundance of smooth drywall and carpet (?!), and not enough exposed brick, duct work or sleek, modernist lines. Then we stepped into the 21 Ten Lofts, across the street from where the new library will be. El Dorado architects took a grand, historic landmark with a brick and terra-cotta façade that was originally designed by Wilder & Wight and transformed its interior into an oasis of urban cool.
