Last fall, Stan Goodman, whose family has owned I. Goodman Custom Tailoring since 1954, decided it was time to harness more attention from drivers zipping past his store's façade on Johnson Drive. Depending on the time of year, Goodman usually hangs banners over the doorway of his little shop with wimpy messages such as "Get your prom dress alterations here" or "We have wedding attire." But this summer, subtlety wasn't cutting it. So Goodman, inspired by the current mystic religion that is low-carb dieting, made a new banner: "Low Carb Alterations Sewn Here." The non sequitur made a splash on the suburban thoroughfare, says Goodman, who has since marshaled another advertising scheme to riff off the vanities of sugar-pop culture. His newest sign reads "Extreme Makeovers Begin Here."
