People don't always go to a rock club to get rocked. Sometimes, they'd prefer to be transported to a synthesizer-smothered fantasy world, led by musicians who are so at ease in their tour-guide roles that they'll sit and play their keyboards on the floor. The Stella Link and Namelessnumberheadman, two trios whose members switch instruments between songs without any look-at-what-we're-doing fanfare, compose the sort of trance-inducing instrumental epics that cause listeners to lose all sense of their surroundings. But neither completely surrenders its link to the organic world, with devastating drumbeats anchoring the often ethereal soundscapes.
