Daily specials at the Merriam Café include a myriad of reliable Americana -- soup and a grilled cheese sandwich, tenderloin and fries, burgers, and Reubens, each served with a drink for less than five bucks. To ease the steep calorie intake, diners can walk across the street to the Turkey Creek Trail, where the paved path winds under willow and cottonwood trees from Johnson Drive to Shawnee Mission Parkway just above the creek -- a surprisingly secluded and quiet piece of scenery despite the proximity of some of Johnson County's most heavily traveled thoroughfares (I-35, Johnson Drive, and Shawnee Mission Parkway). The trail connects at Johnson Drive with sidewalks and other paved trails that crisscross Merriam's quiet neighborhoods east and west of I-35 -- but lunch and the walk might be dangerous, because people who partake might never go back to work.
