Here's something you don't see too often: a marital disagreement playing out in a letter to the editor in TheKansas City Star. Back on February 9, the Star quoted Kansas City, Missouri, City Councilman Bill Skaggs in an article about proposals for public art at the new Sprint Center. "I just hope it's better than what they put at the airport," Skaggs told the Star. "Have you seen that junk up there?" Obviously, Skaggs' wife, Sandy, didn't want her husband speaking for all of his constituents. She responded in a February 15 letter to the Star. "After 42 years of marriage, it probably won't come as a surprise that I occasionally disagree with my husband," she wrote. She added that, though she loves and admires him, "he is off base when it comes to art." Sandy wrote that she loves the sculptures at the airport, the "hair curlers" on Bartle Hall and the shuttlecocks at the Nelson. "I find all of these pieces refreshing and imaginative, and can't wait to see what we will use to adorn the new arena." She noted that Da Vinci, Rembrandt and Renoir all had detractors and she figured that Bill was just "carrying on the tradition of the traditionalists." The two of them agree that the city should pay for public art. But, she assured readers, she and Bill would be "further exploring" the debate.
