Best Midnight Matinee

Big Jeter, Audio/Visual Club

Usually, midnight movies offer cult favorites, inspiring even people who have seen the film a dozen times to make the trip for novelty's sake. Big Jeter, however, tempers the menu of classics (Dolemite, Shogun Assassin) with true oddities such as the inept '70s slasher flick Midnight Caller and the surreal Night Warning, in which a teen's only chance of being absolved from a murder charge is to prove his heterosexuality to a surly detective. (Seriously.) Viewers remain respectfully silent during the superior films, but the shouted-out wisecracks during the duds are more than worth the price of admission. (When Midnight Caller's faceless killer tore apart a magazine full of swimsuit models, apparently to establish his misogynistic mindset, one patron yelled "Sports Illustrated should be about sports!") Priceless trailers from vintage horror, martial arts and blaxploitation films precede the main feature, as does a thematically appropriate number from Big Jeter, who got funky before Dolemite and honored Steele Justice's snake Three Step (don't ask) by creating a new dance craze in its name.
