When it comes to miniature golf, we want the works. We want windmills, moving mechanical objects and water hazards with a depth of 4 inches dotting our Lilli putian AstroTurf fairways. Fortunately for us, Cool Crest, an eastern Jackson County institution, has provided generations of Kansas Citians this wonderfully cheesy experience for more than 50 years. Part botanical garden (the courses are shaded by a variety of trees) and part museum (look for the collection of seashells in its display case), Cool Crest is an enchanting, almost romantic place to putt around. Its four courses contain a plethora of hazards at each hole, from a tilting rocket to a moving harlequin wielding a putter. Those who become frustrated with that much kitsch might find comfort in the arcade, the batting cages or the go-kart track. As the TV commercials once proclaimed: "It's a nice place! A family kind of place!" We're inclined to agree.
