It was the day before St. Patrick's Day when Steven St. John and Doug Medlock of 97.3's morning team dreamed up a contest to give away tickets to the Royals vs. the Red Sox in Boston. Because the lucky winner would go to Beantown, the Planet jocks would make contestants eat beans. And because the next day was St. Patrick's Day, they'd be
green beans -- even better,
lima beans. The next morning, in front of O'Dowd's Irish Pub on the Plaza, three or four guys had a set amount of time to eat as many canned lima beans as they could. One contestant quickly took the lead, thanks to his strategy of pouring all the beans onto his paper plate and using it to funnel them into his mouth. St. John was providing a play-by-play when he noticed the funnel guy's eyes cross. He was starting to sweat and jerk a little bit. The one rule was that contestants couldn't puke until after the contest.
Is he gonna make it? Is he gonna make it? St. John asked ... and then
Oooohh. Barfed-up lima beans splattered the street corner in front of O'Dowd's -- and listeners all over town were
screaming because, thanks to St. John's color commentary, they could picture every chunk. "You can tell when something's going over pretty well on the air," St. John told us later. "When I make Doug laugh, I think I'm making everybody else laugh and vice versa. That day we could barely talk we were laughing so hard."
