We always liked Rod Parks' midcentury home-décor shop, Retro Inferno. But ever since Parks moved to the amazing, super-'60s building on Truman and Grand -- you know, the one with the aluminum solar shading in front of the windows -- all that stylish furniture has looked even better. That's partly because Parks left in place all sorts of details that date the building -- ashtrays by the elevators, a winding staircase, a secret executive bathroom behind wood-paneled closet doors. He also added his own touches to take the design up a notch; most notably, he painted a pattern of earth-toned geometric shapes onto the concrete floor. And the lightbulb-covered letters that spell out
Inferno -- salvaged from the Inferno Lounge on Troost and saved by Parks for just such an occasion -- are out on the floor of the retail area, visible from the street.
