Best Music Venue That Isn't Really a Music Venue

R Bar

Low-burning candles, dark and polished décor and stiff cocktails make this West Bottoms hideaway one of the best places to score an intimate night with a band. (No, not like that. For that, there's always the Riot Room.) As evidenced by its name, R Bar is a drinking establishment first and foremost. But the cozy enclave has become one of the city's best places to hear a band. Musicians perform on a short stage at the front end of the long barroom, but don't worry if you aren't sitting up front. Sidle into a booth in the back, order a cocktail — we recommend the Elder Hombre — and soak in the ambience. You'll hear every strum and twang with clarity.
