Best Neighborhood Bar: Lawrence

The Bourgeois Pig

Combining the atmospheres of a European bistro and a small-town watering hole, the Bourgeois Pig occupies a singular space in downtown Lawrence. Don't let the Marxist name fool you; the Pig is far from an elitist clique of philosophy-spewing beatniks in turtlenecks. The bar attracts a laid-back blend of artists, students and townies — a mix representative of the Lawrence community. Its calling: a place to grab a beer, a glass of wine or even coffee, and to camp out with a book, a friend or your laptop (there's free Wi-Fi). But if you're just looking for a stiff drink, the Pig offers a host of specialty cocktails, blended with house-infused liquors. The interior is intimate and classy, and the walls are always adorned with works of local artists. Patio seating in both the front and back accommodates smoking and watching the Massachusetts Street foot traffic.
