With its light-wood décor and KU memorabilia, Maloney's might look like a typical Johnson County sports bar. Thanks to its nightly drink specials and friendly crowd, though, it doesn't feel too cookie-cutterish. Though the fraternity-sorority contingent makes up a good chunk of drinkers here, the place also attracts the tattooed, the pierced, the service-industry crowd and the married couples. The result is a laid-back atmosphere, where everyone is united by cheap drinks and by finding, in Starbucks parlance, their third place (aside from home and work) to hang out.
