What do you do when friends don't want to leave after a long night of drinking and playing cards at your house? If you're the original owners of Sammy's in Strawberry Hill, you build an addition onto your house and open shop. That's exactly what the owners of what would eventually become Sammy's did in the mid-1940s. That same bar is still going strong more than 60 years later. With a small, neat cursive sign in the window proclaiming "Sammy's," the building has the look of a miniature Elk's Lodge on the outside and the feel of a little log cabin inside. A painting of dogs drinking at a pub covers one whole dark-wood wall, and there's comfortable seating throughout. And every now and then, you can still see folks playing cards.
