City Councilman Ed Ford voted down a plan to add bike lanes to Kansas City's streets because he worried that sharing the road with cars would be too dangerous. What cars? On evenings and weekends, downtown Kansas City completely car-free. It's safe as can be. And pretty. Riders can gawk up at the sunlit buildings and weave up and down spooky side streets. The vast, empty parking lots are perfect for popping wheelies. A sprint up to the Lewis and Clark Memorial overlooking the Missouri River offers a view of the sunset. To the north, there's the River Market, with ribs, beer and blues. Or pedal east, just past City Hall and the federal courthouse, for some crack.
