Anchored by the dimly lit, hip dance club Trago (1108 Grand) and the sprawling three-story behemoth Life (21 W. 10th St.), downtown's reputation as a happening place for nightlife received a substantial boost in the past year. Both venues offer top-rate underground DJs, with Life devoting a room to trance and Trago delving into everything from deep house (Saturdays) to salsa (Sundays). The pace set by pulsing beats inside the clubs is plenty fast, but the comparatively serene feel of the neighborhood provides a refreshing contrast with Westport's hustle and bustle.
