It's not that we don't love Charles Wheeler. Sure, he got creamed in the primary election for Jackson County Executive. Yes, 65 percent of voters chose Mike Sanders (as opposed to the sad little 29 percent who went for Wheeler), but that just means they don't want Wheeler to be county exec. We believe the ol' guy still has some good public service left in him. At candidate forums, we were most impressed when we heard him talk about how the entire metro needs good mass transit. Our pathetic public transportation system definitely needs an infusion of big ideas -- ones that don't come from Clay Chastain, the Kansas City exile who came back to town and petitioned to get yet another light-rail question on November's ballot. We figure Chastain will never go away -- given that the same thing may be true for Wheeler, we'd like to see the two of them go mano-a-mano on a real light-rail debate. Wheeler would kick his ass.
