The owners of Extra Virgin, James Beard-award-winning chef Michael Smith and his wife, Nancy, must have been looking into a crystal ball when they started planning the livelier, more casual and less expensive bistro for the space in the other half of the building it shares with the more formal restaurant bearing Michael Smith's name. Patrons can survive a sour economy with sensibility and style at Extra Virgin, where a mural of the famous La Dolce Vita movie poster reminds customers — who dine richly but not rashly on Spanish-influenced small plates such as roasted goat or grilled bread and house-made ricotta — that maybe, someday, "the sweet life" will return. In the meantime, Extra Virgin continues to lure in a wide swath: from young artists and adventurous foodies to the cosmopolitan set simply needing the right venue to show off their new Raphael Young pumps.
