The Concourse Fountain George E. Kessler Park Benton Boulevard and St. John Avenue
The new fountain on the concourse at George E. Kessler Park isn't a technical marvel like the Henry Bloch Fountain that started shooting and spiraling water last year in front of Union Station. It's not a sculptural beauty like the Plaza's J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain. But the Concourse Fountain in Kessler Park makes for a splashing good time on a hot Sunday afternoon. Fifteen jets of water shoot straight up, beckoning children to touch them, ride a bike through them, sit down and let the water wash over them. The city spent half a million dollars to renovate a decrepit old fountain that closed in 1996 on the same spot, and city parks officials asked nearby neighborhood groups to help with the new design. Good thinking.
