Here's to rage and range. Out of nowhere, it seemed, just two years out of college, Cedric Hayman headlined twin Unicorn shows and found visceral life in characters who, on the page, verge upon abstractions. In Topdog/Underdog,his Booth was a con man of ferocious charisma, an angry but boyish monte dealer who, with his justifications, worked himself and his brother harder than he did his marks. In Bug! he bravely suppressed that charisma and seemed at first to be playing that rarest of characters in any narrative -- the black nerd. This was just softening us up. By coming on so calmly in his early scenes, his craziness late in the show seared with even more heat. Two wildly different characters, but in both shows, Hayman's whispers rang louder than other actors' shouts.
