Waldemar Uhl is no ordinary baker. He's a
konditormeister -- German for certified master pastry chef. Wally trained for years in Europe, working his way up from apprentice before earning the equivalent of a doctorate in decadent dessert making. Housed in a small strip mall, Wally's Pastry Shop might not look like much from the outside, but inside, it's a gallery full of edible art, from the towering wedding cakes to the perfectly sculpted
petit fours. Wally runs the place with his wife, Martha, and son, Manfred, who is also a konditormeister. After forty years in business, the Uhls have built a following of people from all over the globe who stop by whenever they're in Kansas City. "Some days when I have a bad day and I want to close up," Martha says, "someone I haven't seen for a long time comes in and makes it all feel worthwhile."
