Best Place To Eat After 3A.M.

The Heriford Grill

It doesn't matter what part of town you're coming from at that wee hour -- the nightclubs in Westport, the Northland casinos, a late factory shift downtown -- the chatty, chain-smoking gals behind the counter at the Heriford Grill have the coffee brewing and hash browns on the grill. The tiny café (fifteen stools, four tables, a jukebox and a dozen ashtrays) has been a fixture on the east side for 52 years. Neighborhood lore has it that Harry Truman once ate there, back in the 1950s, making special note of a sign on the wall advertising "8 Hamburgers for $1." The way locals tell it, he stirred his coffee and said, "If I was rich, I'd buy eight hamburgers right now." The place still sells a bag of eight burgers -- for $4.20. Most diners prefer to eat there, though, especially in the pre-dawn hours, when a cheese omelet with potatoes, toast and jelly goes for $4.30.
