If you learn how to play bocce from the instructions in your Restoration Hardware-issue set, you're just learning to play cricket by another name. If, however, you attend league night -- Wednesday for women, Thursday for men -- at the American Sons and Daughters of Columbus, you are becoming an heir to an Italian-American tradition. You are also quite possibly smoking a cigar, drinking a beer and singing along to "That's Amore." Because some of the more established league members are getting on in years, these leagues are eager for young blood. But don't be fooled: Anyone who ventures over to the American Sons and Daughters of Columbus should come prepared for a little shit-talking. These people are serious about their balls.
