From the vantage point of winter, summer is a time to get outside and enjoy the long daylight hours, the freedom that is coatlessness, the fresh greenery. But when summer arrives, we are reminded of two pesky details: It's hot out, and we are wimps. So instead of sitting inside and crying about how we WOULD go outside if only it were cooler, we compromise. We sit in the shade. We don't move around a lot or exert ourselves physically. We pick up a good book and head to the grounds of the Linda Hall Library, which sits on a 14-acre urban arboretum. Among the 150 varieties of trees, everyone is sure to find shade that just feels right. We like the spot under the tree with the rubbery, almost-black leaves near the building itself, but that's just us.
